IT283 Networking with TCP/IP
Part 1
1. TCP/IP or Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol is a set of standardized rules
that allow computers to communicate on a network such as the internet. TCP allows for

transmission of information in both directions. Computers systems that communicate
over TCP can send and receive data at the same time. This protocol uses packets, or
individual chunks of data. It facilitates the exchange of messages between
computers/devices on a network. IP is a protocol that routs and addresses packets so they
can move across a network and arrive at the correct destination. Everything that connects
to the internet is assigned an IP address and packets are attached to the IP address, so they
arrive where they need to go. TCP/IP was born in 1969 when the Advanced Research
Projects Agency or ARPA for short, funded a project looking to create a long-distance
network. They needed a network that could withstand a nuclear attack, for all types of
computers to be able to communicate easily, and a way to connect systems over long
distances. TCP/IP debuted in the 1970s because early networking researchers realized
data had to move from different networks and to multiple locations. Work actually began
in 1973 on TCP/IP and Internet Protocol version 4 or IPv4 was rolled out in 1978.
TCP/IP is called a referred to as a suite because it is a collection of protocols designed to
work together. A Request for Comment or RFC are official standards documents
published by the Internet Engineering Task Force that cover all of the methods,
behaviors, research, and innovations applicable to the working of the Internet. They are
identified by a number in which the highest number is the latest and most up to date
version of the document.
