Advanced nursing practice and advanced practice nursing may sound interchangeable,
but the definitions of these terms say otherwise. One of the differences between advanced
practice nursing and advanced nursing practice is that advanced nursing practice carries a
definition that is out of range to advanced practice nursing. Advanced nursing practice holds
such an expanded definition to incorporate specialties that don’t involve direct clinical care such
as administration, informatics, public health, etc. (Tracy & O’Grady, 2018). Advanced practice
nursing’s definition is more concrete and is role focused. Alleman & Houle (2013) state, the
advanced practice nurse must be one of the four roles: nurse practitioner (NP), clinical nurse
Second, whether it’s a master’s or a doctoral degree, the education requirement is a primary
criterion for advanced practice nursing. Tracy & O’Grady (2018) mention that the “APRN’s
must possess an earned graduate degree with a concentration in an APRN role” (p. 66). While
advanced nurse practice will recommend higher education such as a DNP, it does not define a
role specific education in which Tracy & O’Grady state, “Some of these roles are not APRN
roles as advanced practice nursing is defined here” (p. 64). Third and last difference I will
explain is the difference in the focus of the two terms. Advanced practice nursing is heavily
based on the core competencies and direct clinical practice is a central concentration. It is
imperative that APRNs are focused on patient and family. If advanced nursing practice carries a
definition that nurses who are within the “advanced specialties” like administration or
informatics and not in the four roles, they view “direct practice as a devaluing of their
contributions” (Tracy & O’Grady, 2018, p. 68).
