Introduction
, The most critical thing to know about oil spills has significant and immediate societal, cultural and
economic effects. Thousands of aquatic animals and plants are affected as oil spills occur. “The Gulf of Mexico oil
spill of 2010 was by far the worst accidental oil spill in American history. Yet, as this article by Leslie Kaufman of
the New York Times indicates, scientists are only beginning to scratch the surface in their understanding of the
impacts of this disaster.” (Benzel & Turk, 2014)
Objectives The main objective of this experiment was to "simulate the bioremediation of marine oil
spills" (Carolina Distance Learning, n.d.)
Hypothesis Activity #1 – Due to it being day one of the experiment I figured no results would appear yet.
But with me putting mixture in tube 2 I knew the color would change. The third tube, I don't think there's going to
be any change other than the oil floating at the top of the water. However for vial4, I suspect there will be a change
in color as well as a change in presentation. Tube number three, I don't think there's going to be any improvement
other than oil floating on top of the bath. However for vial4, I suspect there will be a change in color as well as a
change in presentation. Ultimately, tube number 6, more than vial 5 will have the biggest breakdown due to the
extra microbial suspension I placed in the tube.
Materials and Methods
The products I used were 10 plastic pipettes, 6 culture tubing, cleaning powder, cheese cloth, funnel,
tetrazolium powder, plastic cups, bottled water, 10 percent bleach solution, pencil and corn oil. The process I used
for Activity1, I took a 100 mL graduated cylinder to weigh 140 mL of warm tap water, and then I placed it in a
plastic cup. I added the Rid-X and mixed it with the water. After that, I took a cheesecloth in the funnel to filter all
the pulp out of the mixture. I got rid of the cheesecloth and the pulp until it was done. Then I drained 100 ml of
purified water out of the container into a brown bottle of tetrazolium powder. Then I took all 6 tubes and
numbered them 1-6 with a pen. I placed 1 mL of tetrazolium in tubes1, 2 and 5 in each tube After that, I added 2
