Guttman model is niet realistisch want alle responspatronen komen voor in empirische data. Dus probabilistische versie (Protector model) van het deterministische Guttman model. Threshold functie, maar neemt niet waarde 0 of 1 aan, alleen alles ertussen. (1-m voor groter dan waarde b en m indien lager of gelijk aan waarde b). Waarde m (by mistake - error propability)) is altijd groter dan nul (dus low-trait participanten altijd kans om correct antwoord te geven), en lager dan 0,5. En m-1 is altijd kleiner dan 1 (dus high-trait participanten altijd kans op incorrect antwoord geven). Non-decreasing. Kans op correct item is 1-m voor latent trait boven treshold.
