Labor Unions: Critical Advancements Needed for Survival
Labor Relations HRM 330
DeVry University
Introduction- Tasha Miller
Picketing lines, catchy sayings, and strikes are all components of a labor union in the
thick of a union election or a labor dispute. The motto “Yes we can” was the slogan used during
former President Barack Obama’s start of a lucrative senate career and was later used as the
saying when launching his successful presidential campaign. Interestingly the Spanish version of
this saying, “Si se puede, was coined three decades earlier, by Dolores Huerta, the co-founder of
the United Farm Workers labor union [ CITATION Jac15 \l 1033 ]. Labor unions, their sayings
and diplomacies have undoubtedly shaped the employment & political landscape.
When we think of labor unions what comes to mind? Perhaps your opinion of labor
unions will categorize these organizations as either a necessary evil or as a strict avoidance.
Unions can be viewed as a necessary evil as well as type of leverage for the employee’s voice
when unfair management practices such as low wages, poor benefits, and unfair treatment needs
to be addressed. The thought of having a unionized workforce will be viewed as a strict
avoidance to a business as this institution can potentially increase labor costs, threaten
productivity and the efficiency of the business.
Labor unions are a “trade and/or worker’s union, which is an organization that represents
the collective interests of employees. Labor unions help workers unite to negotiate with
employers over wages, hours, benefits, and other working conditions. They are often industry-
specific and tend to be more common in manufacturing, mining, construction, transportation, and
the public sector” [ CITATION Wil19 \l 1033 ]. Although many American workers are in favor
, of unions, union membership is declining. According to the United States Bureau of Labor
Statistics in “1983 the union membership rate was 20.1% and there were 17.7 million union
workers. Recent statistics of 2019 shows that union membership rate was 10.3% and there were
14.6 million union workers. Demographically African Americans were more likely to remain
union members than other races such as White, Asian or Hispanic. Men continued to have a
higher union membership rate than women and the peak unionized occupations were protective
service, educational, training and library occupations” [ CITATION Uni20 \l 1033 ].
Declining labor union membership could be a result of a deteriorating economy as well as
some businesses that are shifting to a work-from-home basis for some of its employees, pre-
pandemic. Most firms want to prevent being unionized because this threat can dramatically
reduce a company’s profitability. Profitability is at risk during a work stoppage. Work
stoppages are primarily due to strikes, “employee initiated cessation of work due to a labor
dispute, or a lockout, employer initiated denial of employment during a labor disagreement”
[ CITATION Dre12 \l 1033 ]. Other companies are utilizing their human resource business
partners admonition to reject union acceptance by “not engaging in any unfair labor practices,
create and enforce fair, consistent polices, and to offer a competitive pay and benefit package” [
CITATION How \l 1033 ].
A general statement is that a labor union is not needed unless management is fair to its
employees. However, when a company has no regard for its employee’s well-being, pays low
wages but expects long working hours, and simply treats the staff unhuman-like, then undeniably
unions are needed. Labor unions are the third party required when there is not a balance between
efficiency, equity, and employee voice in the workplace. At the onset of our discussion, unions
were described as necessary evils. Due to the threats of having a unionized workforce most
companies will try to ensure employee satisfaction to prevent a union election. However, unions
