Chronic Kidney Disease
Our bodies are critical to our survival; without taking them correctly, we have had significant
health issues that can make life not worth living. One of the vital organs in our urinary system is our
kidneys. Without them, we would not have the filtering system to eliminate toxins and waste in our
bodies. Also, the kidneys help bring back vitamins, glucose, and other vital substances into our
bloodstream. If we didn't have kidneys, it would make everyday life difficult because we would
constantly be on dialysis, which gets rid of harmful toxins and waste by filtering it out of our blood. The
kidneys lie against the posterior abdominal wall and underneath the 12 th rib. They are also
retroperitoneal, meaning that they are posterior to the parietal peritoneum. The ribs offer some
protection to the kidneys, as does a heavy cushion of fat encasing each organ ( Thompson, 2013). If we
didn’t have a protective layer of fat and the ribs, our kidneys would be compromised, and a higher
chance of being punctured or bruised. It is imperative that when something is wrong that we get
checked out by a doctor to get the treatment needed.
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a continuous decline of our kidney function, this kind of
damage to our kidneys is unrepairable. If this disease is untreated, there is a high risk for kidney failure.
Damage to the kidneys causes CKD, in which the kidneys do not adequately filter the blood. In addition
to the buildup of waste products in the body, CKD can cause various other health problems, including
poor nutritional health, high blood pressure, anemia (a low blood count), weakened bones, and nerve
damage. CKD also increases the risk of heart and blood vessel disease. Suppose CKD progresses to the
point where the kidneys are severely damaged and stop functioning ( Alic, 2013). Patients with chronic
kidney disease can also get worse and get diagnosed with anemia, bone diseases, and heart and blood
vessel issues that can come with having this disease.
