,Course Aims:

By the end of the course, the student will be better able to take part in every day
conversational English with his listening, speaking and pronunciation skills
improved.

Course Rationale: (1058 words)

Being an adult, it can be extremely daunting to learn a new language simply because
they don’t enjoy making mistakes. They like to feel as if they are succeeding in every
possible aspect of the challenge. Adults have a higher sense of self-direction and
motivation, they use their life experience to facilitate learning. Adults are focused on
achieving goals and need to know how the information is relevant.

I chose a skills-based syllabus because Alberto wants to improve his listening,
speaking and pronunciation skills. In a skill-based syllabus, the content of language
teaching involves a collection of particular skills that may play a role in using the
language. (Herrera, 2012) States that the primary purpose of a skill-based
instruction is to teach the specific language skill that may be useful or necessary in
using language. Skills are things that people must be able to do to be competent in
a language. A skill-based syllabus merge linguistic competencies (pronunciation,
vocabulary, grammar and discourse) together into generalized types of behaviour
such as listening to spoken language for the main idea, writing well-formed
paragraphs, delivering effective lectures and so forth. To fulfil Alberto’s needs we
will be covering:
 Speaking skills:
- Giving instructions
- Personal information
- Job interview
- Talking to your English friend over the phone
 Listening Skills:
- Listening for specific information
- Listening to English movie clips
 Pronunciation:
- Read a car advertisement
- Select 10 words
- Drilling

The reasoning behind why I chose these topics is purely based on Alberto. Knowing
what would interest him, I wanted to incorporate as much of his interests as possible
therefore making him feel comfortable with our lessons and for him to know that I
took into account his interests/hobbies. Being an adult paying for his studies, Alberto

, wants the best possible outcome for him. It is so important to create lessons that are
worth his while.

The topics I included are as follows:
 Football (his favourite sport)
 Job Interviewing (help his progression in his career)
 Different kinds of conversations (understanding conversational English)
 The environment (one of his interests)
 Music (one of his interests)
 Horror movies (one of his interests)

The materials I included are as follows:
 Short YouTube clip on football and Topic cards on Football (Hour 1)
 Short YouTube clip on job interview tips (Hour 2)
 Flash cards on different kinds of talking. Homework: a short clip on the
weather forecast (Hour 3)
 Pictures and a short YouTube clip on the environment (Hour 4)
 Flash cards as well as a YouTube clip on horror movies. Homework: Match
the sounds (Hour 5)

The above topics are going to make each lesson interesting and fun for Alberto and
this will make him feel excited about his learning experience. Growing up Alberto
only used course books to learn English therefore he has specifically asked for all
materials to be authentic and that is what I took into account when preparing the
lessons.

The skills I have chosen to focus on is based on what Alberto would like to improve
on. His writing skills are on par for an intermediate student and therefore he would
like to focus on Speaking, Listening and Pronunciation (his conversational English).
This is the reason I have chosen the selected target skills. The course has been
structured in the following order because I believe Alberto needs to get comfortable
speaking English first, once he is comfortable we will focus on listening for gist and
specific information. Once he understands what he needs to listen for we will move
onto pronunciation. I want to focus on pronunciation last because he needs to feel
comfortable speaking and he needs understand what he is listening for. We will
focus longer on pronunciation, paying specific attention on vowels, homophones,
rhymes, syllables, etc.

Below you will find a breakdown on the skills being taught:

Speaking part 1 – In this lesson we will be focusing on football. The first lesson is
aimed at getting Alberto to talk about a sport that really interests him. Due to him
