Summary of the short story ‘The Story of an Hour’

Louise Mallard has the most sudden shock of her life, when her sister Josephine and

Josephine’s husband Richard broke the news of Louise’s husband Brently’s death to her.

Louise Mallard’s husband was believed to have died in a tragic train accident. Louise

Mallard suffers from a very serious heart condition, and because of this her sister

Josephine had to deliever the news to her as gently as possible. Upon hearing the news of

her husband’s passing, Louise decides to lock away herself in a room to cope with the

death of her husband. Instead this only gave a sense of freedom as she was feeling

suffocated in her marriage. She felt as though she was free from the constraints of her

husband. Her sister Josephine begged and pleaded with her to open the door until she

finally co-operated and opened the door. Louise embraced her sister and they went

downstairs to meet Josephine’s husband Richard. When they arrived at the bottom of the

stairs, Louise’s husband Brently came storming through the door unaware of any accident

that had taken place. Richard being aware of Louise’s heart condition, tried to stand in

front of Brently to prevent her from seeing him, However it was already to late, as Louise

had already seen him and she screamed and fell to the ground and died. The Doctors were

called in to examine the body but she was declared to have died from heart disease as her

heart could not handle the sudden Joy f having Brently back.
