IntroductionThe English School describes international relations by showing the
influence of history and philosophy on human nature, the individual, the
state and how states relate to one another in international relations.
Although each theory has distinct characteristics, a central criticism
against the English School is that many of the philosophers may fall into
more than one theory because their ideas overlap. This may allow you to
compare philosophers more freely and come to more critical
conclusions.
Realism
- What is realism? Discuss the main tenets:
• Pessimism
• Power
• Anarchy
• Foreign policy gets prominence
• Opportunism
• War inevitable
• Ethics justified in terms of necessity
The study of Realism is focused on themes that that outline; the
importance of power, the opportunistic character of humans, the
pessimistic view of human nature, the manner in which ethics are
justified in terms of means, and the affect these themes have on the
general feeling of anarchy and threat of conflict in the international
system.

they are realists. Do not just list the philosophers; you need to provide
details about what the philosopher says and how it is linked to the
