Disarmament; 1958-1965

 Aims = stop the development of nuclear weapons
 Reasons for development = due to cold war, nuclear development increased drastically.
 Protests = 1958 CND, four-day London march
 Success = USA, USSR and Britain signed the nuclear test ban treaty.
 Slogan= “Ban The Bomb”



The Hippies; 1960s

 Aims = wanted to bring peace in all aspects
 Reasons for development = ongoing violence and discrimination, wanted to end it.
 Protests = Woodstock, they also defied western dress codes
 Success = link to anti war
 Slogan= “Make love not war’’



The Women’s Movement 1960-1970

 Aims = To bring gender equality, in todays time we identify them as feminists
 Reasons for development = discrimination against women was normalized and prominent
 Protests = 1968 crowned a sheep Ms America
 Success = Introduction of birth control, and abortion became legal in many states.
 Slogan= “The personal is the Political”



Anti-War Movement 1964-1972

 Aims = Put an end to the Vietnam war
 Reasons for development = US government imposed drafts for young men to fight in the
Vietnam war.
 Protests = 1965 Boston anti-war protest, Kent university 1970, veterans threw away medals
publicly, burnt draft passes publicly
 Success = Nixon pledged to bring troops home.
 Slogan= “Draft beer not students” “Hey LBJ how many kids did you kill today”



Student Movements early 1960s

 Aims = promote free speech, end racism in university institutions
 Reasons for development = triggered by the CRM.
 Protests = SDS was founded, free speech campaign 1964, link with hippie movement
 Slogan= Linked to all the movements
