2.1 Purpose
The purpose of this module is to enable you to use a systems approach to understand how macro
aspects of South African labour relations apply to management practices. The syllabus includes labour
relations concepts, theories and perspectives; the external environment; the state; employees and their
representatives; employers and their representatives; other stakeholders and institutions; collective
bargaining structures and processes; and industrial conflict, disputes and industrial action.
