4: Doc 36- Doc laments how his life has been ruined by draft. Set up medical tent so efficiently the two enlisted men (Gus and Wes) take care of everything for him. Above
Daneeka 44 102 degrees sent to hospital (except Y), on 102 told to come back in an hour to be checked, below 102 gums painted purple with gentian violent solution and given
a laxative to throw away.
Doc watches Major -De Coverley throwing horseshoes with celluloid eye patch (celluloid stolen from Major Major’s orderly window).
Doc Daneeka feels sick and when Gus and Wes can’t find what’s wrong, he considers transferring them for someone who can find something wrong.
He must fly to earn flight pay but hates flying as he feels trapped. McWatt adds Doc’s name to manifests so he doesn’t have to fly.
Doc “frozen with horror once and never unthawed”
Colonel Korn creates rule to ask no questions after they are used to waste time in Clevinger’s educational sessions and so they stopped.
5: Chief 45- Doc’s story about the newlyweds trying to get pregnant. Wintergreen found oil at training base using Halfoat’s talent of always sleeping over oil. Wintergreen afraid

Chief sees white men as foreigners and wishes for them to go home. Lands ravished by ensuing oilmen who were following them across country due to ability to

Mission learn of Y’s routine and his exposure in the bombers bay. Wishes to be in the back of plane with Aarfy. Avignon memory- Dobbs goes crazy mid-air and
Snowden hit in back of plane and bleeds out over Avignon.
6: Hungry 58- HJ flies all missions but rotation papers never arrive but doesn’t complain, extremely restless and sensitive to loud noises and has nightmares nearly every night.
Joe 67 Always tries to take pictures of naked women but never succeeds due to accidents like no film in camera or lens cap etc. Gets girls to undressed by telling them he
was a photographer from Life magazine, and he was pre-war. (same magazine Heller worked at). Offers fame, fortune, divorces and sex. Worships women as
sexual beings. Can’t decide to physically engage or take photos- Live life in present or past.
HJ has most combat tours in Air Force. Always hopes to go home. Due to nightmares Colonel Korn makes him fly supply ship to rid screams. Doesn’t admit having
nightmare problems he sees it as normal.
Cathcart always volunteers men for extremely dangerous missions.
Appleby always wins ping pong and Orr smashes head open with paddle after getting drunk. Chief punches Colonel Moodus (Dreedle’s son in law he hates and
brought to war with him). Chief does it for General’s benefit.
Captain Flume (PR officer) scared of Chief as he thinks he and everyone else is going to slit his throat and so lives in woods in fear. Says he will return when Chief
dies of pneumonia (prophesised by Chief to be his end).
Major Major squadron leader now
7: McWatt 68- McWatt Y’s normal pilot. Milo’s origins in the squad and formation of the syndicate- dodgy business deals that don’t add up and lead to Milo making a profit for
76 himself.
8: Lieutenant 77- Clevinger is smart but no common sense. Constantly ostracised for appealing to both sides of debates i.e. communism
Scheisskopf 93 Scheisskopf forced cadet officers rather than elections and wants everyone to march. Cruel and manipulative at times. Wife is an adulteress behind his back to the
cadets. Wife is aggressively sexual. Scheisskopf always tries to get Clevinger punished (McCarthyism).
Cares more about parades than family and spends all his time planning them for Sunday competitions. Lots of outlandish ideas like attaching rows to wooden
beams or not swinging arms.
Men do not take competitions seriously as they bring no reward. Clevinger suggests the election of their own officers and once allowed by Scheisskopf make great
historical success.
Metcalf and incompetent officers.
9: Major 94- Major Major uses the Washington Irving name. Looks like Henry Fonda and a very mediocre man. Heller echoes the eponymous character in Edwin Arlington
Major Major 119 Robinson's poem "Miniver Chevy”. Resemblance to Fonda and name made him an apologetic joke to society. He thought for the first years of his life his name was
Major Caleb but when he found out it was Major; he became socially isolated and withdrawn. Nonconformist and so FBI file started on him
Once made Major and so squad commander he became isolated from his peers again. Scheisskopf looked after him in cadet school. Further withdrawal due to
looking like Henry Fonda
Sees work as boring and so W.I. signing provokes entertainment. Ponders relationship to de Coverley and meaning of executive officer.
CID investigation into Washington Irving begins and so Major changes pseudonym to John Milton- Paradise Lost. Sets up system so no one can visit him in his
office ever after being attacked by squadron.
Yossarian contacts Major by tackling him to the ground in his sneak back to his trailer. Major washes his hands of Y’s woes.
10: 120 Clevinger MIA.
Wintergreen - Wintergreen disliked frequent deserter. Creates oil myth at cadet school
