Defining and providing a background of Neoclassical Art

A time of artistic expression known as the neoclassical period is thought to have
peaked between 1770 and 1830 (Hawk 2022). It supplanted the earlier art
movements of the Rococo and Baroque eras, which were derided as being overly
ornate and superficial and emotionally extravagant, respectively (Hawk 2022).
Neoclassicism was expressed through paintings, books, architecture, and
performance art forms including music and theatre, and was thought to be more
bland or emotionless than preceding eras' expressions (Hawk 2022). The goal of the
neoclassical art movement was to rekindle the spirit of classical Greek and Roman
thinking, culture, and architecture (Hawk 2022).

Neoclassical art, often referred to as Neoclassicism and Classicism, was a
significant and pervasive trend in painting and other visual arts that started in the
1760s, peaked in the 1780s and '90s, and continued into the 1840s and '50s (Irwin
2018). When depicting Classical themes and subject matter in paintings, it typically
took the form of a concentration on stark linear design with the use of
archaeologically accurate locations and attire (Irwin 2018). Neoclassicism is an
artistic philosophy that draws inspiration from the ancient art of Greece and Rome
and emphasises harmony, clarity, restraint, universality, and idealism (Irwin 2018).
Classicism in the context of the tradition either refers to artwork created in antiquity
