The value of studying History
Het bestuderen van de geschiedenis biedt de kans om een stap te zetten buiten de interne
mechanismen van de discipline van de psychologie. Dit kan je helpen om te zien hoe al
deze elementen zich hebben ontwikkeld in relatie tot specifieke problemen. Een tweede
voordeel van het bestuderen van de geschiedenis is dat ideeën die we tegenwoordig als

The History of Psychology has a History
Psychologen zijn altijd al geïnteresseerd geweest in het bestuderen van hun eigen
geschiedenis. Een van de eerste Amerikaanse teksten over de geschiedenis van de
psychologie verscheen in 1912: Founders of Modern Psychology, door G. Stanley Hall.
Een andere vroege tekst was A History of Experimental Psychology, gepubliceerd in
1929 door Boring. Hij wilde de status van de psychologie als een experimentele
wetenschap gebaseerd op laboratoria versterken. Het is duidelijk dat de geschiedenis van
de psychologie al lange tijd de interesse wekt van psychologen vanwege verschillende
redenen. In de VS was Watson heel invloedrijk in de geschiedenis van de psychologie.
Hij was getraind als klinisch psycholoog, maar besloot in 1959 om zich alleen nog maar
te wijden aan de geschiedenis van de psychologie. Hij publiceerde een artikel getiteld
'History of Psychology: A Neglected Area'. In 1965 ontstond er een afdeling van de APA
die zich wijdde aan geschiedenis: divisie 26. Watson stichtte ook een nieuw tijdschrift,
the Journal of the History of the Behavioral Sciences.
Ways to study the past
Historiografie is de technische term voor het schrijven over geschiedenis. Het kan ook
verwijzen naar historisch werk. Sommige historici richten zich primair op de
ontwikkeling van belangrijke ideeën en hun intellectuele en disciplinaire contexten,
waarbij ze de sociale en politieke factoren die hierbij een rol speelden verwaarlozen. Dit
onderscheid wordt internalisme versus externalisme genoemd. De meeste historici
proberen een balans te vinden tussen deze twee posities. Sommige historici nemen een
'Great Man Approach' aan, waarbij de geschiedenis wordt verteld door de bijdragen van
belangrijke mensen in het veld. Hierbij worden externe factoren vaak genegeerd. De
Zeitgeist benadering houdt rekening met het feit dat de 'spirit of time' de ideeën van
