Crafting Chiasmus and Anaphora Worksheet
Directions: There are two parts to this assignment. Read each section carefully and follow the
instructions.
Part 1: Analysis
Explain in two to three sentences each the meaning, effect, and effectiveness of the
following chiasmus examples:
1. “I wasted time, and now time doth waste me,”—William Shakespeare, Richard II
This means what should have been done, was not, now you have to wait and let time pass.
The effect that is created is that time is being wasted, but it should not be. This is extremely
effective to get the point across.
2. “Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind.”—John F. Kennedy,
speech to the United Nations General Assembly
The meaning is that war never stops and it will kill us all. The effect is to motivate the end of
the war. It is effective.
3. “Bad men live that they may eat and drink, whereas good men eat and drink that they may
live.”—Socrates
This means that men who eat to live, live for a cause. The effect is to discourage greedy
acts, or explain the difference in pleasure and survival. This is effective.
Explain in two to three sentences each the meaning, effect, and effectiveness of the
following anaphora examples:
4. “Cannon to right of them,
Cannon to left of them,
Cannon in front of them
Volley'd and thunder'd;”—Lord Alfred Tennyson, from “The Charge of the Light Brigade”
The meaning of this is that they are cannons around every corner, pointing at us and the
soldiers are being pointed at. The effect is to create a war scene. It is effective.
5. “We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing
confidence and growing strength in the air, we shall defend our island, whatever the cost
may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight
in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills.”—Winston Churchill, Speech to the
House of Commons
The meaning is to create an inspirational warning in the midst of war. Churchill uses
