Context
Her father began to lose his eyesight in her teenage years and hence the family was plagued
into economic hardship, and she had to help aid him with her sister.

As an adolescent, she played timed verse writing games with her two brothers.
Rossetti was Dante Gabriel’s model for ‘Ecce Ancilla Domini’ and ‘the girlhood of Virgin
Mary’- she had her own mask of purity to live up to- idea of masquerades alike to the theme
of a dolls house. nora is never seen alone for a long period of time.

1849 was Rossetti’s most productive year, also the most productive year of the pre-raphelite
brotherhood.

Felt envy of her sister who joined all saints to become a nun, something christina long
considered herself to be; she perceived Maria as a saint.

Her fiancés were collinson and Cayley- broke off the engagements due to religion.

Brotherhood magazine (terminology a lot like that of Goblin Market)-The Germ published a
few of her poems under a psydenuym.

Christina declined the offer made by Dante Gabriel that she should become an honorary
brother.

Dante Gabriel poem jenny about a prostitute- showing a level of empathy why some women
fall.

, Poem ‘I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills’- poem which shows her inability to have a
family.

Addictions to laundanum.
Dante Gabriel’s revisions to Christina’s manuscripts- trying to soften what he deemed as
‘metric jolt, screech’ ‘queer rhymes and groans’.
Revisions to goblin market title; originally ‘a peep at the goblins’ - was inscribed to my dear
only sister Maria, but was erased. The poem was inspired by her cousins “mrs bray a peep at
the pixies”- the erasure of two dedications of a woman is significant.

Elizabeth siddal and rossetti were entombed together.
Economic transactions.

Thomas means- twin

Louise- renowned warrior

Maude- powerful battler
Nell- like nora, shining light.

Naturalism- extreme realism revealing darker sides of life contrasts to romantic or
melodrama

Alternative Germanic ending 1880- nora doesnt leave the house, she is forced by helmer to
the doorway of childrens bedroom. (Barbaric act of violence)

Contagious diseases act- forced medical examination of any woman suspected to be a sex
worker.

Sexual diseases rife at the time; syphilis, sexual disease.

Morality- belived to be hereditary and contagious; poor morality could make your children
sick and inherit corruption.

Napoleonic code made the authority of men over their families stronger

Ibsen and financial loss; his father company suffered great financial loss, alcoholic.
Ibsen mother in law leader of feminist movement in Norway whilst his biological mother was
an influence for many of his female characters and the reason why his work is so full of
suffering women; the conventional angel of the house and devout Christian

Sexual disease; the flea john Donne

Women beauty standards; jewels and fashion served as proof of husbands wealth and power
