Dear Student

As part of this tutorial letter, we wish to inform you that UNISA has implemented a
transformation charter based on five pillars and eight dimensions. In response to this
charter, we have also placed curriculum transformation high on the agenda. For your
information, curriculum transformation includes the following pillars: student-centred
scholarship, the pedagogical renewal of teaching and assessment practices, the
scholarship of teaching and learning, and the infusion of African epistemologies and
philosophies. These pillars and their principles will be integrated at both the programme
and module levels, as a phased-in approach. You will notice the implementation thereof in
your modules, and we encourage you to fully embrace these changes during your studies
at UNISA.

1 INTRODUCTION TO THE MODULE

Welcome to the teaching practice component of your professional development. Teaching
practice is the core of our teacher education programmes, and we will do our best to make
your teaching practice experience interesting, rewarding and successful. The experiences
and reflective exercises are aimed at guiding you in conceptualising and understanding
teaching and learning in the Foundation Phase.

This is a year module and this document contains essential guidelines for your school
practice period. Please start arrangements early in the year and complete the assignments
properly. In this tutorial letter you will also find the teaching practice assignments and
instructions on how to prepare and submit them. We h a v e also included certain general
and administrative information:

• Study material - your study material will be sent to you by courier after
registration. It is also available on myUnisa.
• Inventory letter - you should receive an inventory letter indicating what has been
included in your study pack, and also showing items that are still outstanding.

3

, Check the study material that you have received against the inventory letter. You should
have received all the items listed in the letter, unless it is stated there that something is out
of stock or not available. If any item is missing, follow the instructions on the back of the
inventory letter without delay. Unfortunately, your lecturers cannot help you with missing
study material.

The Department of Despatch (despatch@unisa.ac.za) should supply you with the following
for this module:

a. Tutorial Letter 101 - General information and the first two assignments
b. Tutorial Letter 102 - Te aching practice placement form letter to the principal
and Teaching Practice Office contact details
c. Tutorial Letter 103 - Assignment 50 (one of the portfolios you need to complete
during teaching practice.)

d. Tutorial Letter 104 - Assignment 51 (one of the portfolios you need to complete
during teaching practice.)

In addition to these tutorial letters, you may receive others during the year. If you have
access to the internet, you can download the tutorial letters for the modules for which you
are registered from the university’s online learning management system, myUnisa, at
http://myUnisa.ac.za.

2 PURPOSE AND OUTCOMES

2.1 Purpose

The module seeks to support qualifying graduates in their initial teaching experiences – “the
micro-contexts of everyday life in classrooms” (Cohen, Manion, Morrison and Wyse, 2010:
1), and proceeds from the understanding that education is context-specific and context-
dependent.

It is a work-integrated learning (WIL) module where the focus is on guided observation in
three areas (Mathematics, Language and Life Skills), helping qualifying graduates to
observe practice and make connections between what they have learned, what they
have observed and what they have experienced.
