, Introduction
Psychological assessment is directed at acquiring a variety of
information by making use of different psychological assessment
measures and information from multiple sources [ CITATION Fra18 \l
1033 ]. The main aim of early childhood assessment within the
South African context should be to acquire information and
understanding that will encourage the child’s development and
functional abilities within the family and community[CITATION Fox13
\l 1033 ]. Development is affected by various factors such as
socioeconomic status, age and sociocultural factors and the test
administrator needs to be sensitive to these factors. Young children
are difficult to assess precisely because of their activity level and
short attention span. They are also cautious of strangers and tend to
perform inconsistently in unfamiliar environments. When testing
young children the test administrator needs to take into account
these factors: age, socioeconomic status, cultural background and
sensory integrity in the young child.

child under 18 years of age’. It involves physical (e.g. Abandonment,
lack of supervision, and failure to provide for child’s basic needs of
food, clothing, safety, hygiene), medical, educational (e.g. Failure to
enroll a child to mandatory schooling), and emotional neglect (e.g.
