Tam Tam Mobile is a community waste disposal scheme in Melen, an area of
Yaoundé, the capital city of Cameroon. Before the scheme, the area had no
waste collection and the waste ended up in ditches and blocked drains when it
rained.

The scheme started in 1997 and has grown so that now a team of 60 people are
paid to collect waste from 300 houses.

Recently, the United Nations widened the unpaved roads for easier access for
waste collection. A local charity helped train staff and provided protective
clothing, gloves, wheelbarrows and rubbish bags.

0 1 . 5 To what extent is managing environmental issues, such as waste disposal, a challenge
in cities in LICs/NEEs?

Use Figure 2 and your own understanding.
