, INTRODUCTON
Illegal dumping has become a pressing environmental issue in my community,
Braamfischerville, located in the Roodepoort area of Johannesburg West. Over the
years, I have observed a steady increase in the dumping of waste in public spaces,
which is often attributed to poor service delivery, such as inconsistent waste
collection by PikitUp, and a general lack of awareness among residents. The
community's limited understanding of the negative impacts of illegal dumping on
both the environment and human health has further exacerbated the problem.
Through my portfolio, I aim to raise awareness about this issue and encourage
positive change. My approach involves conducting surveys to understand the root
causes of illegal dumping and engaging the community through meetings, social
media, and local youth centers. By educating residents on the environmental,
health, and legal consequences of illegal dumping, I hope to foster a sense of
responsibility and encourage proactive behavior.
Additionally, I plan to implement initiatives such as organizing clean-up campaigns,
creating awareness groups, and promoting recycling and upcycling practices. By
working together as a community and adopting sustainable waste management
practices, we can mitigate the harmful effects of illegal dumping and create a
cleaner, healthier environment for all.

BRAAMFISCHERVILLE: AN ENVIRONMENTAL PROBLEM
I live in Braamfischerville, a small township in the west of Johannesburg, Gauteng,
which falls under Roodepoort. Braamfischerville is named after Abraham Louis
Fischer, a South African lawyer and anti-apartheid activist. Having lived here for
several years, I have become increasingly aware of the environmental problems in
my community, many of which are linked to poor service delivery. As I moved
around the area in recent weeks, I began to notice the growing extent of these
issues, particularly those related to water and drainage systems. Leaking taps and
