DEFINITIONS

Diet
The food that an animal eats every day.

Vitamins
Organic substances which are only needed in tiny amounts.

Minerals
Inorganic substances needed in small amounts to maintain a balanced diet.

Peristalsis
Muscle contractions that help to move food down the alimentary canal.

Bran
Outer husk of cereal grains such as oats, wheat and barley.

Saturated fat
The find of fat found in animal foods.

Coronary heart disease
A condition in which the coronary arteries become stiff and narrow due to a build-up of fat
deposits, and cannot supply enough blood to the heart muscle, as a result the heart
muscle runs short of oxygen and cannot work properly.

A state of being fat or overweight which is dangerous to health.

Lack of food / being unfed.

Malnutrition
Malnutrition is caused by not eating a balanced diet.

A single cell protein made from fungus, with a structure similar to that of penicillin so it is
made up of hyphae. It is grown in large vats with carbohydrates and other nutrients as a
food source. RNA is removed and it is shaped into chunks to be eaten or prepared.

Something which is added to food for reasons other than nutrition.

Digestion
The break-down of large, insoluble food molecules into small, water-soluble molecules
using mechanical and chemical processes.

Alimentary canal
A long tube running from one end of a mammal’s body to the other.
