Pillay (2006):

- Studied 94 athletes and their testosterone levels using
samples of saliva.
- The results demonstrated that males and females in
the most aggressive sports had higher levels of
testosterone, showing that high testosterone could
have an effect on aggression levels.
Testosterone (a male hormone) influences aggression. It is an
androgen and is produced by the ‘Leydig cells’ in the male testes
and in the adrenal cortex. The release of testosterone is rhythmic
following a natural circadian rhythm. Levels of testosterone reach
a peak in young adult males and then gradually decline with age.
