Video Assignment - Unit 3

Columbia Southern University

MOS 6701- Advanced Ergonomics

For this Unit, the topic of discussion is Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). MSDs are

illnesses and or injuries that affect an individual’s body, injuries that will more than likely stay

with the individual for the rest of their life, if it cannot be corrected by surgery. These MSD

injuries cause the person to be in an extreme amount of pain and can even restrict their body

movement. According to the CDC, MSD can account for almost 70 million doctor visits thru

out the United States on a yearly basis. That is not take in to account the emergency room

visits, outpatient treatments, which is an estimated 130 million in total (CDC, 2020).

MSD injuries can occur for numerous reasons. MSD can happen when an individual

performs a task that they are not physical capable to doing or they are performing a task

incorrectly resulting in an injury to their body. Task such as Highly repetitive tasks,

performing work in an awkward posture, being subject to a task that requires the use of

excessive force while performing the tasks (Middlesworth, 2015). Several of these injuries or

disorders are cause by the job that the workers hold. Injuries that are a result of work

environment or job performance is referred to as a work-related musculoskeletal disorder

(WMSD).

Common WMSD’s injuries of individuals in the work force are mainly injuries that

affect lower and upper extremities, the lower back and neck (Hossain et al, 2018). Some of the

most common WMSDs that can be seen in occupational careers would include strains, sprains,

muscles tears, carpal tunnel syndrome, back pain, and hernias. Each of the priorly mentions

examples can be prevented if the individual uses the correct processes and procedures, and they

, have an ergonomically correct workstation.

Description of the Task Being Performed

In the video that was given for evaluation, two young men seeming to be in there early

to mid-twenties were preforming the task of moving what looks to be 8x8x8 cinder blocks from

inside a garage to a wooden pallet. The pallet was located about 4-6 feet from cinder blocks.

As mentioned, prior, this task was occurring inside a garage area with the door open.

However, that is not the only going on within the garage. There was a lot of background noise

where the individuals were working. The level of the background noise does create an

environment that if the people are exposed to that level of noise for a long period of time could

lead to hearing damage. The two individuals that are seen in this video did not have any personal

protective equipment (P.P.E) on. Items like gloves, safety glasses, hearing protections, or

protective shoes. The two gentlemen could have sustained several injuries, such as cuts on their

hands or possible a broken finger, hearing damage, and possibly crushed toes from dropping a

cinder block on their feet.

Individual and Work-Related Factors in the Video

When looking at the factors that can lead to MSDs, there are three main ergonomic

factors to consider, high repetitive tasks, use of excessive force, and awkward postures. Other

factors such as an individual’s poor work habits, self-care habits, and health habits can

contribute to MSD’s (Middlesworth, 2015). When watching the assigned video several

ergonomic factors were detected that could lead to either of the workers developing an MSD.

The first ergonomic element that can be identified is the highly repetitive task, which

basically mean when a task is performed repeatedly by an individual. This is a common
