To do for tutorial 3:
- Write about Roland Barthes
- Chair discussion for Simone Bouvoir
What is the dominant approach to culture within CS?
CS approaches culture by studying “ordinary” life rather than “high” culture. Do not ask what culture
is but how it is used and what it does.
In what ways does it digger from the previous approaches?
CS used to approach culture by studying “high” culture rather than “ordinary” life. CS used to try and
define culture.
Find an example of a practice/object that Raymond Williams would consider “cultural”. Would
Matthew Arnold agree to classify this practices/object as part of human culture? Why/why not?
Street musicians in the trains of Barcelona. Raymond would consider this part of culture, as it is part
of ordinary life. Matthew wouldn’t consider this to be part of culture as it is part of the uncultivated
masses.
Raymond Williams is the founding father of international studies
Lived culture = people who are alive right now have their own culture. Then when we die we leave
recorded culture (art, trivial objects, notes) for our next generation which has it’s own culture. The
parts of recorded culture that are still part of the lived culture now is called culture of the selective
tradition.
To do for tutorial 2: mock assignment (blackboard)
Means of production are for example plastic, electricity, transport, etc.
Conditions of production are its significance (why are things significant? Because they are not
identical to other things that are alike)
The means of production of the carnival in Rio of 2018 are rather simple; singers, dancers, shackles
and chains, costumes, music, a situation in which modern slavery is enforced, the dare to bring this
problem up to the public eye and carriages. The conditions of production of this carnival is that it
addresses a specific political cause. This years carnival is rather political because it addresses the
sensitive topic of whether slavery still exists in Brazil or not, whereas general carnivals in Rio are
about preluding Lent. This particular carnival is significant because it is more politically oriented than
other carnivals, which are seasonally oriented.
