ANOREXYINTRODUCTION
Anorexia is not a disease, it is a behavior problem. It is not a malfunction of the
biological system that causes anorexic problems. Furthermore, anorexic behaviors
are those that alter the functioning of the organism. Anorexia is a label used to
designate a set of behaviors related to weight control. It is not a disease that one
suffers or has (the expression "has anorexia" is incorrect) but this label summarizes
a description of behaviors that can help us to give quick and synthetic information
but that, in itself, we cannot use to determine how to intervene on the problem.
The most effective treatment for anorexia is behavioral therapy (even versus
medication treatments). Meta-analyzes show that the use of this therapy produces
more consistent weight gains over time and advances hospital discharge. Despite
this, we must not forget the importance of collaboration with other health
professionals such as doctors or nutritionists. Furthermore, due to the risk to survival
itself posed by this behavior, we must remember that emergency medical
interventions are sometimes necessary, which also influence psychological treatment
and therefore the meta-analyzes carried out.
WHAT IS ANOREXIA
Anorexia: an eating behavior problem characterized by:
1. an irrepressible desire to continue losing weight without the person recognizing
the progress of their thinness
2. at the same time that a distortion in the perception of body image develops
3. Very often an obsession with food.
It is a lifestyle in which the slimness and perfection of the body become the primary
goal to which any other goal in life is subordinated.
DEFINING ISSUES
1. The fundamental element is the restriction in food intake. You stop eating or
consume only certain foods or insufficient amounts of them. Sometimes, when a
prohibited food is eaten, behaviors are carried out to eliminate this “excessive”
intake: exercise, vomiting and laxatives or diuretics. The objective of these behaviors
is to avoid the possibility of weight gain and / or to achieve an even lower weight.
