Dialogue:
T: Many people today choose to live a different kind of life to what is generally considered the
norm. Can anyone think of a synonym for the word ‘different’ in this context?
S1: Other?
T: Not quite. Think of the type of word it is. What part of speech is the word ‘different’?
S1: An adjective?
T: Yes! Well done! Why is it an adjective? Which noun does it describe?
S2: Life?
T: Close. Look at the sentence again. Please remind us what a phrase like ‘kind of life’ is called?
S2: A noun phrase?
T: Exactly! Good work! ‘Different’ is an adjective, because it describes the noun phrase ‘kind of
life’. Let’s look at another example. Jeremy wanted to do something interesting and unique, rather
than simply stick to the standard and mundane. Samira, can you think of another word we could use
for ‘unique’ in this context?
Samira: Special?
T: No, the word I’m thinking of starts with the first letter of the English alphabet and has four
syllables. It’s quite a tricky one. I’ll give you a hint. The band ‘Nirvana’ can be classified under this
genre of music.
Samira: Alternative!
T: Truly well done Samira! How did you know that?
Samira: I’m a huge Nirvana fan!
T: Interesting. Good work Samira! Everyone repeat after me: Al-TER-na-tive.
C: Al-TER-na-tive.
T: Again!
C: Al-TER-na-tive.
T: Great work everyone! Can anyone tell us where the stress is on the word ‘alternative’? On which
syllable?
S2: The second syllable?
T: Yes! Well done! Now just to make sure everyone understands this concept, I would like you to
think back to the two images we looked at when learning the word ‘conventional’. Does
‘conventional’ have the same meaning, or similar meaning as ‘alternative’? Fabien, what do you
think?
Fabien: No, I think it’s like, the opposite meaning.
T: Correct! ‘Conventional’ and ‘alternative’ are antonyms. Well done!

antonym for the word ‘alternative’. We’ve also seen that the noun form of the word ‘conventional’,
