causing stresses which weaken the rock’s coherence,
assisting erosion comparable to cavitation in rivers.
▶ Hydraulic action is particularly obvious in well-bedded an
well-jointed rocks such as limestones, sandstones, granite
chalk but as well as in poorly consolidated rocks such as
clays and glacial deposits.
▶ Hydraulic action is notable during times of storm wave
activity. One such example is the average pressure of
Atlantic storm waves which is 11 000kg/m².
▶ This process is known as wave pounding.
