the learning programme and activities. In grade 9 the teacher starts with classroom activity, from
Grade 8 learners are simplifying the following algebraic expression using the concept “like terms”: 4ab
− 2a + a2b + ab − a (ab + 3).
Diagnostic assessment content related diagnostic assessment is done to establish which aspect of
mathematics a learner has difficulty to understand. Often, the teacher can make this diagnosis herself
and assist the learner in- or after class.
Formative assessment is used to aid and improve the teaching and learningprocesses, hence
assessment for learning. It is the most commonly used typeof assessment because it can be used in
different forms at any time duringa mathematics lesson, e.g. mental mathematics (oral or written),
class workactivities during or at the end of each lesson (written), verbal questioning duringthe lesson
(oral) and homework (written). Not only the teacher, but also thelearners themselves need to reflect on
their progress, and learn the skill ofself-assessment. Self- and peer assessment allows learners to
learn from, andreflect on their own performance.
