Introduction
For this assignment we have been tasked with designing and developing a 3D model of a
house which could be used as part of a game. The genre of the house and its surroundings is
completely up to us but once the theme has been selected we must stay true to it. The
genres of the house could include: horror, SCI-FI, futuristic etc.
Scenario and Requirements
Audience
In the assignment brief we have been given there is no mention of a specified audience
rather we were asked to choose the genre of the house we will be making. From this we can
gather that our potential audience may be of a mature age to account for the fact that we
may pick horror for our genre yet young enough to accept the fantasy genre. So we should
assume our audience could be of ages 15/16 and above.
Purpose of digital graphic
The purpose of this 2D and 3D digital graphic will be to enhance and add to an already
existing landscape. The house we create will be used to populate this landscape and have
more feel and depth to it. This is because the house we create for this assignment may be
used in a game developed by the company.
Client requirements
For this assignment we are required to at least create 5 of our own assets. This could include
window, door, railing, house and a patio. Another requirement is to incorporate a 2D
element into our 3D model. This can be done by using a 2D background for our house to set
the scene.
Intended platform for the delivery
This project will be created on the assumption that it will be used in a game meaning the
potential platform could range from PC to consoles. Now that the intended platform has
been addressed other factors should be considered such as quality and resolution. We must
create a product that can be viewed on most platforms and does not require cutting edge
hardware to run/view and we must consider the scalability of the house. It must be created
so it can be viewed on a small and larger screen without any drop in quality.
,Legal and Ethical Considerations
When creating this animation I must consider copyright laws. The images and sounds that
may appear in my animation must be approved in order for me to use and for all the assets
that I use in my animation I must credit the original artist/creator. Any image or sound that
is not my original work must be credited to maintain copyright laws.
I should also consider ethical issues and ensure that the assets I source and create are
appropriate and should be mindful not to cause any misunderstandings as I cannot afford to
create a product that can be offensive to certain people. This matters especially as I can
choose the genre of my house and say if I went for the theme of war I should be extremely
mindful not to include anything that can offend or hurt anyone. Some ethical issues I should
consider are confidentiality and representation. For example in my digital graphic, if I do use
real world figures they should be people who are respected and are acknowledged by their
efforts in improving or fighting for what is right. I should definitely avoid using any real
world figure that is viewed in a negative light or people that are out right considered
despicable.
Design
Initial ideas
At the beginning of this assignment, my first thought was to create a horror themed house. This at
the time was a good idea as I had a clear image of what exactly I wanted to do but when it came to
creating mind maps, sketches etc. I found that if I had chosen to create this horror house it would be
extremely time consuming and I would be cutting it close to my deadline for this project. In the end I
have chosen to change my genre from horror to modern for two reasons. One being I believe that I
can produce a more accurate and realistic product and the second reason being that the creation
time for this modern house will be considerably shorter than the horror house meaning I will have
more time for the documentation part of my assignment e.g. optimization, evaluation.
, Mood Board
This is the mood board I have created. As you can see I have included many images of modern
houses and certain elements of a modern house. I will be using this mood board and my mind map
to hopefully inspire me and generate an image of the house I will be creating within 3ds max.
Sketches
As you can see above this is my sketch for my modern house. I have taken some inspiration from the
houses in my moodboard and combined them into a single house as you can see above. This is only a
rough sketch and may need some tweaking/improvements as it is plain and bland. I will make
changes and improve my sketch based on the feedback I receive from my peers.
