6.2 Study design

The importance of specificity, accuracy, reliability, and validity with regard to
fitness testing.

Specificity: the degree to which a test is consistent and stable in measuring what it’s intended to
measure. This depends on how strict the test conducted is and the individual’s level of motivation to
perform the test.
-How close a determined value is to the actual value and depends on the procedures and equipment
used.

Accuracy: the degree to which the test actually measures what it claims to measure and the extent to
which conclusions and decisions made on the basis of test scores are appropriate and meaningful.
-The instruments with which we measure the fitness component must be accurate

Reliability: refers to how close a determined value is to the actual value and depends on the procedures
and equipment used. A reliable test produces the same results if repeated.
-The consistency of test scores over time and across alternative measurements
-Reliability tries to estimate how much of the change between the different trials is due a change in real
score.

Validity: the ability of the rest to correctly identify the parameters which are most important in regard to
the claims of the study.

-Does the test measure what it is supposed to measure?
