LOD: Be able to justify methods, interpret findings and report on conclusions of forensic techniques

P5/P6:

Report:
Physical: footprint analysis

Case Number_____________ Evidence Number ________________
CSI/Officer_______________ Date___________________________

Method of collection:
The method used to collect the footprint was the brushing method. We used a paint
brush to brush the surface of the footprint that was left on the ground at the crime scene
using aluminium powder. After the footprint was visible enough, we have applied a large
clear sticky tape over the footprint mark on the surface to pick up the trace evidence. We
then applied the large sticky tape with the footprint, on acetate paper.

We have chosen this method of collection because it was the most suitable for collecting
a footprint because it shows clear details and a clear representation of the footprint
found at the crime scene.

Analysis of print/impression:
Within this crime scene investigation, many people had the accessibility to enter so the
probability of finding a suspect is very low because there have been many traces of
footprints of different sizes and shapes as shown in the picture below.

However, the most similar shoe print is the one in the middle. The detail of the shoe
matches the details of the suspect D shoe because the pattern of the design of the shoe is
the same as the design pattern of the footprint. Also, within the picture it can be
observed that there are darker patches and brighter patches where dirt probably was,

,this can be seen in both pictures. The lines at the heel of the shoe also match with the
suspect’s shoe heel. The footprint does not correspond to the other shoe patterns as the
details are very different and can be seen in the pattern of the right shoe that there is a
vertical line which in the footprint is not visible.

In conclusion, the footprint found at the crime scene matches the footprint of the
suspect’s D shoe. This indicates that suspect D was at the crime scene.

Characterisation of Evidence:
The evidence was found on the side table where the victim was laying on in the crime
scene room. The footprint was identified because there were traces of blood on the floor
which the perpetrator has walked in.
The footprint has a pattern at the toe of the shoe like the toe of the suspect’s shoe. It can
be observed that the size of the footprint and the size of the shoe are similar as well as
the shape of the heel shows a similarity in both pictures. It can also be seen that there are
darker areas and brighter areas of dirt that are also visible in the footprint impression.

, Physical: toolmark analysis

Case Number_____________ Evidence Number ________________
CSI/Officer_______________ Date___________________________

Method of collection:
The method used to collect the toolmark was the casting method in order to investigate
the impression of the tool’s shape that has been used in the crime scene. We have used a
silicone-rubber cast to collect the impression that was found on the victim’s head. We
have investigated 3 different hammers that could fit into the rubber cast. There were 3
moles at 3 different crime scenes. Each hammer was tested to see if it can fit into its
specific rubber cast.

Analysis of mark/impression:
The rubber cast had specific tool mark impressions in which specific hammers fit into.
from our investigation, the first rubber cast was specific to the hammer that was used by
suspect B. The size and shape of the hammer did fit into each compartment of the rubber
cast.
The second rubber cast was specific to
the hammer that was used by suspect A
and the last rubber cast was specific to
suspect D. The size and shape of each
rubber cast was specific to the circular
end of each hammer.
However the similarity found within all
3 hammers is that the first hammer and
the third hammer (from the picture)
has the same metal end, the size and
shape of the cast is also the same. So
the suspects can be either suspect D or suspect B.

Characterisation of Evidence:
The evidence was found at the crime scene on the victim’s head. This gave us an
indication that the victim has been killed by a perpetrator that used a hammer. A tool
mark/impression typically are found at scenes of forced entry.
A tool mark can have many characteristics in terms of shape and size. The shape of the
impression was round, and the size was medium to small.
