1. The role of technology during the Covid-19 pandemic in the air cargo industry

supplies, and vaccines, the air cargo industry has played a crucial role in ensuring the

that technology played in the air cargo industry during the Covid-19 pandemic.
1.1 Contactless Operations
The Covid-19 pandemic led to increased adoption of contactless operations to minimize the
risk of transmission of the virus. Air cargo companies adopted technologies such as self-
check-in kiosks, automated bag drop, and biometric identification systems to minimize the
need for human interaction during the cargo handling process. For instance, in May 2020,
Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) launched a contactless self-check-in kiosk that allows
cargo agents to drop off their shipments without having to interact with staff. The kiosk uses
facial recognition technology to authenticate the user, scan the cargo label, and print the
airway bill. This technology not only reduced contact but also reduced the time required for
cargo handling, leading to increased efficiency and faster turnaround times.
1.2 Digital Platforms
Digital platforms played a significant role in enabling the air cargo industry to adapt to the
challenges posed by the pandemic. With the disruption of global supply chains, air cargo
companies turned to digital platforms to source and manage their cargo. Digital platforms
such as cargo.one, Freightos, and WebCargo provided a one-stop-shop for cargo booking,
tracking, and pricing. These platforms enabled shippers to access real-time information on
cargo availability, transit times, and rates, making it easier to plan and manage their logistics.
For instance, in 2020, Qatar Airways Cargo launched a digital platform that provides
customers with a seamless booking experience, real-time tracking, and instant pricing.
1.3 Drones
Drones have been used in the air cargo industry for several years, mainly for remote delivery
of medical supplies and other critical goods. During the Covid-19 pandemic, drones played a
crucial role in facilitating contactless delivery of medical supplies and PPE to remote areas.
