Read the quote below from Laurent Dubois’ piece “Atlantic Freedoms”:

“At the basis of every work of history is a question of positioning. This is also, on some level, an
ethical question. Whose history are you telling? And from whose perspective? As the Haitian
thinker Jean Casimir likes to put it, when you write the story of Columbus arriving in what the
indigenous people then called Ayiti, you have to make a decision: are you on the boat or on the
shore?”

Place the quote above in the context of Du Bois’s article. Proceed to reflect on the argument he
is making in the article, in relation to how the first chapter of CLR James’ The Black Jacobins
presents the slaves at the centre of this world historical moment.




In order to answer the main question regarding positionality, one must look at and expand on
three things: what positioning is and examining historical perspectives, analysing the literary
devices in Jean Casimir’s quote and lastly, linking these points with C.L.R. James’s The Black
Jacobins.

Firstly, positionality refers to how differences in social position and power shape identities and
access in society. Dr Mark Griffiths finds that factors such as gender, class and privilege
influence one’s lens through which they see the world -and thus- the way they tell history
(Griffiths 2). According to Laurent Dubois, throughout time, the history that is studied and written
is mostly written from the viewpoint of those that have favorable positions (Dubois). These can
