“The economy, the circular flow”. Choose a learner-centered teaching method (excluding
the flipped classroom) that you think will be suitable for this lesson. The lesson must be CAPS
aligned (see p 44 of the CAPS document).
Hint: Discuss the learner-centered method you have chosen by answering the following questions
(provide a relevant heading in each instance):
Learner-centered techniques include discovery learning, inductive or inquiry learning, and a far
greater emphasis on the learner. The teacher is the primary planner and facilitator of student
learning in both models.

Small Group Task
This method involves two or more learners in a small-group task where active participation of all
members is required. Teacher is expected to make sure that the group is small to allow members
to interact equally. This method allows learners to give and share information and explain
concepts to each other. However, the challenge may include the fact that some learners are
negative and influence the group’s learning process negatively. According to Forsyth, (2016:3)
group work is a teaching method that brings learners together to form relationships and try to find
assistance and support according to Johnson & Johnson, (2003). Group work is cooperative with
learners working together as a team. Benefits of group work is that it increases productivity,
allowing for the utilization of variety resources and experiences according to Johnson & Johnson,
(2003:579). Group work, however, can be seen as ineffective because learners tend to shift
dependency from the teacher to the expert learners in the groups. Some learners become more
convinced that they can teach others without the support of the teacher, while others become
convinced that they are unable to learn without the support of the group.
