,1.1 The National curriculum statement grade 12 is designed to berelevant and applicable to the South African context. It
emphasizes the acquisition of knowledge and skills that are
meaningful and useful to students in their daily lives. By
promoting local knowledge and content while being mindful of
global trends, the curriculum aims to prepare students for the
challenge of the modern world.
This approach is consistent with the idea of ‘decolonizing’ education,
which seeks to challenge the dominance of western knowledge
system and promote local ways of knowing and understanding. By
placing greater emphasis on local knowledge and skill, the curriculum
can help to promote greater cultural awareness and respect.
However the challenge lies in ensuring that the curriculum is both
locally relevant and globally competitive .while it is important to
promote local knowledge and value, it is equally important to equip
students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in a
rapidly changing global economy.
In Conclusion, the National curriculum statement grades 8- 12 are
important steps towards promoting a more inclusive and relevant
education system in South Africa. Therefore it is important to ensure
that curriculum strikes a balance between local and glob al
knowledge and skills.

Personification involves assigning human qualities or attributes
to inanimate objects or abstract ideas. This strategy can be
used to help learners understand mathematical concepts by
making them more relatable.
Example 1
, A fraction is often seen as a difficult concept for learners but
personification can make it more accessible. Imagine a pizza with
different toppings-some slices have pepperoni while others have
mushrooms. The pizza can be personified by giving it a face or voice,
and can help learners understand fractions as parts of a whole they
can see one slice of pizza with mushroom is half of the whole pizza
while a slice with pepperoni is another half’
Example 2
-another concept that can be challenging for learners is geometry,
especially shapes and angles by giving them a distinct characteristics,
such as a square being ‘stubborn’ because it’s always has four sides
or a right angle being ‘self-righteous’ because it always measure 90
degrees. This can help learners understand the properties of
different shapes and angles and how they relate to each other.
However, using Ndebele beadwork patterns as an example; we can
show how personification is incorporated in maths. Ndebele
beadwork patterns demonstrate mathematical concepts such as
geometry, symmetry and patterns. By assigning human
characteristics to those patterns the concepts become more
relatable and easier to understand e.g. a pattern can be described as
‘brave and strong’ if it has thick, bold lines that stand out .such
descriptions help learners remember the patterns and their
mathematical properties better.
1.3 the principle of caring about the development of students
mathematical proficiency incorporate several key points that are
vital for educators to consider when teaching mathematical
concepts, starting with foundational mathematics skills. This includes
developing student fluency in arithmetic, operations, fractions and
other core mathematical concepts.
