Introduction
In South African schools, there is a growing concern regarding the
unprofessional behaviour exhibited by teachers. This essay aims to
explore the various types of unprofessional behaviour experienced
in schools and propose a strategy to instil values of accountability
and professionalism among teachers.
One of the prevalent issues observed in South African schools is
absenteeism. Teachers often display a lack of commitment to their
profession by frequently being absent from their duties. This not
only disrupts the learning process but also sends a message to
students that their education is not a priority.
Another type of unprofessional behaviour is the failure to honour
teaching periods. Teachers are expected to facilitate learning and
adhere to a fixed schedule of lessons. However, some teachers
deviate from this schedule, leading to confusion and inconsistency
in the delivery of the curriculum.
Additionally, the lack of preparation and organization is another
form of unprofessional behaviour observed in South African
schools. It is not uncommon to find teachers entering the classroom
unprepared, without lesson plans or adequate materials. This
undermines the quality of education and shows a lack of dedication
to the teaching profession.
