1 INTRODUCTION
Welcome to the module on the Sociology of Education! We are sure you will find the content
interesting and rewarding. We hope that through studying different sociological theories and
their applications, you will be able to develop insight into the complex sociological and
educational processes in the South African education system.
Although we shall support you with your studies, the reality remains that to be successful in this
module, you will need to take responsibility for your own progress. You will receive a tutorial
letter (Tutorial Letter 101) at the beginning of the year. This tutorial letter will include important
information about teaching, learning and assessment. Read all the tutorial letters you receive
during the year and keep them at hand when engaging with the rest of the study material.
Please study the general and administrative information about this module carefully. Complete
all the assignments and submit them on time so that you can start studying for the examinations
as soon as possible.
