Read the scenario and answer the questions below:
Mrs Lannet, a newly appointed educator at Versveld primary school, graduated with a BEd
Foundation Phase from the University of South Africa. She enters the Grade R classroom
for the first time. There are thirty learners in the classroom and their chairs are arranged in
rows of four. The walls are naked, with no sign of what kind of learning subjects are offered
in this grade. The floor is smooth and polished. Books are scattered all over and all the
windows are closed.
Use the space provided to explain how best you can organise the classroom so that it will
communicate to all educators that it is indeed a Grade R classroom.
To organize the classroom in a way that clearly communicates that it is a Grade R
(Foundation Phase) classroom, Mrs. Lannet can follow these steps:
Classroom Name and Grade Display: Place a prominently visible signboard outside the
classroom door that states "Grade R" or "Foundation Phase." This will immediately
convey the grade level to anyone passing by.
Welcome Board: Inside the classroom, create a "Welcome to Grade R" board that
introduces the teacher and provides essential information about the classroom, such as
daily schedules, important dates, and special activities. Use colorful and child-friendly
visuals to make it attractive.
Learning Subject Display: Design and display visually appealing posters or charts on
the walls, representing the different learning subjects covered in Grade R. These could
include basic math concepts, letters, numbers, shapes, colors, and other early learning
topics.
Learning Centers: Organize learning centers around the classroom to cater to various
developmental domains, such as a reading corner, an art station, a manipulative play
area, and a block-building zone. Label each center with clear signs and visuals.
Classroom Library: Gather and organize age-appropriate books and reading materials in a
designated area. Create a cozy reading nook with cushions or small chairs to make it
inviting for the children.
