1. In recent years, the term "sustainability" has gained significant attention as people become more
conscious of the environment due to the rising occurrences of climate-related events. The aviation
sector, a substantial contributor to environmental degradation within the transportation industry, has
come under scrutiny for its role in exacerbating these issues. Critically discuss the types of
environmental issues related to air transport. Incorporating pertinent examples where applicable? (20)

to environmental degradation. Several environmental issues are associated with air transport, and they
have gained increasing attention due to the environmental consequences of aviation. Below, I will
discuss the types of environmental issues related to air transport and provide pertinent examples
where applicable:
1. Greenhouse Gas Emissions: Aviation is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, primarily
carbon dioxide (CO2), which contributes to global warming and climate change. Commercial aircraft
rely heavily on fossil fuels, releasing significant CO2 into the atmosphere.
• Example: In 2019, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported that the aviation
industry accounted for around 2-3% of global CO2 emissions.
2. Aircraft Noise Pollution: Airports and flight paths generate noise pollution, affecting nearby
communities and ecosystems. Frequent and loud aircraft noise can lead to health problems,
reduced property values, and disturbances in wildlife habitats.
• Example: Heathrow Airport in London has been a subject of controversy due to noise pollution,
leading to protests and legal battles.
