Read the case study below and answer the questions that follow.
JJ DE JONG Primary School was previously designated as a model C school. It is located in
Durban’s central business district. Previously, the school only accepted learners from
English-speaking families. Since 1994, however, the school has been inundated with
applications from children from nearby townships. Their primary language is isiZulu. They
can communicate in isiZulu but cannot read it. Recently, the classes have become
predominantly black, with approximately 90% of the learners coming from backgrounds other
than English. Their English-speaking teacher struggles to find common ground with the
learners, owing to her inability to understand isiZulu. English as a First Additional Language,
the curriculum she is using, is not helping her much, because it was designed for learners
who can communicate in English.
Mrs Smith has decided to label all of the classroom furniture and bring in pictures with
captions. She acts out all of the words and sentences and gives the students time to absorb
the new language. She allows students to experiment with the new language, but she does
not tolerate errors. Learners are not allowed to express themselves freely in order to avoid
making mistakes. For the past two years, this has been going on. She complains that her
children are resistant to the strategies she employs. What can you do to assist the teacher?
