Analysis of Lectures
- This is an intro where Austin sets out what he will do in each lecture and provides some
definitions

- Laws proper = commands
- Laws improper = not commands

Types of Laws
- 1. The divine laws, or the laws of God: that is to say, the laws which are set by God to
his human creatures
- 2. Positive laws: that is to say which form the appropriate matter of general and
particular jurisprudence
- 3. Positive morality, rules of positive morality, or positive moral rules.
- 4. Laws metaphorical or figurative, or merely metaphorical or figurative

into two kinds: the express, and the tacit as well as three hypotheses (the pure
hypothesis or theory of general utility, the pure hypothesis or theory of a moral sense;
thirdly, a hypothesis or theory mixed)
- Lecture 3 and 4: the three hypotheses as in lecture 2
- Lecture 5: I distribute laws or rules under two classes: First, laws properly so called,
with such improper laws as are closely analogous to the proper; secondly, those
