COM2601 Organisational Communication

Assignment 1 526519

Question 1

1.1 Define and describe the term organisational communication. (8)

Organisational communication is the lifeblood of any successful organisation, serving as the
conduit through which information flows, relationships are built, and goals are achieved. It
encompasses the formal and informal information exchanges among individuals and groups
within the organisational structure (Jones & Brinkert, 2008). Effective organisational
communication relies on various channels, including formal mediums such as memos,
emails, meetings, and reports, as well as informal avenues like social interactions and
unofficial discussions (Ongori, 2007).

Directionality is another critical aspect of organisational communication, encompassing
upward, downward, and lateral flows of information (Khan, 2014). Upward communication
involves subordinates sharing feedback, ideas, and concerns with superiors, while downward
communication sees superiors disseminating instructions, feedback, and organisational goals
to subordinates. Lateral communication occurs between individuals or departments at the
same hierarchical level, facilitating collaboration and coordination (Shockley-Zalabak, 2011).

Formality in communication varies based on the context and the nature of the message.
Formal communication follows established protocols and procedures, while informal
communication relies on personal relationships and unofficial channels (Cheney et al., 2010).
Content-wise, organisational communication encompasses a wide array of information,
including instructions, feedback, opinions, ideas, and emotions relevant to organisational
tasks and goals (Guffey & Loewy, 2012).

Feedback mechanisms are crucial for ensuring effective communication within an
organisation. Providing opportunities for feedback allows for clarification, alignment, and

, resolution of misunderstandings (Kinicki & Kreitner, 2019). However, various barriers can
impede effective communication, such as noise, language differences, hierarchical barriers,
cultural disparities, and perceptual differences (Rogers & Roach, 2002).

The role of technology in organisational communication cannot be overstated.
Advancements in digital communication tools like email, instant messaging, video
conferencing, and collaboration platforms have revolutionised how organisations
communicate and collaborate (Lan & Wang, 2012). Furthermore, organisational culture
significantly influences communication patterns, with norms, values, and beliefs shaping
how information is shared and received (Putnam et al., 2014).

Organisational communication is a multifaceted process that is integral to the functioning
and success of any organisation. By understanding its various components and dynamics,
organisations can enhance communication effectiveness, promote collaboration, and
achieve their objectives.

1.2. Name and discuss the potential effects of communication technology on
organisational

communication. [6]

Communication technology has profoundly impacted organisational communication,
revolutionising how information is shared, collaborations are facilitated, and relationships
are built within organisations. Here are several potential effects of communication
technology on organisational communication:
