Write a short paragraph in which you explain, in your own words, why we sometimes use
the word “literatures” in the plural form instead of the word “literature” in the singular
form
We sometimes use the word “literatures” in the plural form instead of the word
“literature” in the singular form because we are referring to the collective body of written
works from different cultures, languages, or time periods. When we talk about “world
literatures” or “comparative literatures,” we are acknowledging the diversity and range of
literary traditions and texts that exist globally. This plural form highlights the multitude of
literary expressions and perspectives that contribute to the richness and complexity of
human storytelling. In the context of comparative literature, for example, scholars study
and analyse multiple literary traditions to gain insights into the interconnectedness and
differences between them, which is why the plural form is often used.
