Lecture 1 - introduction to CSR
Content
• What is CSR? Understanding the origins and current state of a disputed concept
• State of the Art: The what, why, and how of CSR
• Roadmap for the course: A comprehensive organizational perspective on CSR

ROADMAP OF THE COURSE

CSR AS…
- Philanthropy (mensenliefde) → ABN AMRO foundation
- Greenwashing
- Governance
- Strategy

THE ORIGINS OF CSR PRACTICES
● CSR originated as a defense of capitalism in 1950s USA
● Unregulated capitalism and the great depression eroded trust; regulation empowered
labor, ended ‘small government’

● Business, supported by academic elites, began to formulate a vision of CSR
● Goal of these initial CSR efforts: keep government out of regulating business
● Proactive effort to argue that business itself was best positioned to regulate the
economy

WHAT IS CSR
● These origins of CSR have influenced voluntary conceptions of CSR
● For example, CSR prominently defined as
“CSR as actions that appear to further some social good, beyond the interests of
the firm and that which is required by law” (McWilliams & Siegel, 2001: 117; cited >10000)
● However, whether firms should engage in CSR has been hotly debated
(we call this “normative approaches” to CSR)

NORMATIVE APPROACHES TO CSR
1. Agency theory (Friedman, Jensen)
a. Suggests that OWNERS are the most important/singular stakeholders

2

, Corporate social responsibility - summary Emma Hamm, 2078889

b. Owners give their money and have any ‘residual’ claims (i.e., what is left)
Social responsibility of the firm = following the law

“The only one responsibility of business towards the society is the maximization of
profits to the shareholders, within the legal framework and the ethical custom of the
country” (Friedman 1970)

2. Stakeholder view of the corporation (Freeman, 1984)
a. Purpose and responsibilities of the firm toward society, with managers as
stewards
b. Firms are responsible to different stakeholders, including employees,
shareholders, customers etc.

A stakeholder in an organization is (by definition) any group or individual who can
affect or is affected by the achievement of the organization's objectives (Freeman,
1984)

(stakeholder approach)

THEORIES OF CSR
Various criticisms from each perspective (proponents = voorstanders)

SCOPE CONDITIONS OF CONTEMPORARY CSR
- Today, those questions – whether firms have a social responsibility beyond following
the law and whether CSR is ‘voluntary’ – might no longer be as relevant as they were
30 years ago
- Instead, we may ask how firms practice CSR
- Let’s have a look why this is the case
