Design a Grade 8 activity for either History or Geography (in Social Sciences)
which will allow Senior Phase learners to demonstrate a sense of self-worth,
and an acceptance of others irrespective of their language, religion, gender,
class, or ethnic group. Hint: Refer to learning Unit 1 under 1.2 relating to
Human rights education in South Africa Use the teaching methodologies that
facilitate leaming about and within a human rights and inclusivity framework,
indicated in 1.2.8 Use any topic from CAPS document to create this activity.
There must be evidence that CAPS was consulted. Which means, you must
write the page number of CAPS document where you took the topic. The
prescribed length for this answer is two pages.
Activity Title: Celebrating Our Diverse Tapestry - A Mosaic of Cultures
(Geography - Grade 8 - CAPS pg. 21)
This activity aims to develop learners' understanding of cultural diversity within
South Africa and promote a sense of self-worth and acceptance of others.
Learning Objectives:
• Learners will be able to identify different cultural groups within South
Africa (Geography - CAPS pg. 21).
• Learners will be able to appreciate the unique aspects of each culture
(Geography - CAPS pg. 21).
• Learners will be able to recognize the importance of cultural diversity for a
vibrant society (Human Rights Education - CAPS pg. 13).
• Learners will demonstrate self-worth and respect for others from different
backgrounds (Human Rights Education - CAPS pg. 12).
Materials:
• Large sheet of paper or bulletin board
• Construction paper in various colours
• Markers, crayons, or coloured pencils
