Introduction:
The COVID-19 and Ebola pandemics have posed significant challenges to global
health systems. Both the CDC and WHO have played crucial roles in mitigating their
effects.
CDC’s Role in the Ebola Response:
o During the 2014-2016 Ebola epidemic in West Africa, the CDC activated
its Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to control the outbreak in Guinea,
Liberia, and Sierra Leone1.
o CDC staff participated in response efforts, deploying to affected countries
and focusing on case detection, contact tracing, infection control, and
epidemiological analysis.
o The CDC also collaborated with international partners to strengthen
surveillance and response capacities in at-risk neighboring countries.
o Notably, the CDC worked on developing an Ebola vaccine in collaboration
with Sierra Leone’s health authorities and the University of Sierra Leone 1.
Establishment and Mandate:
o Africa CDC was launched in 2017 by African Heads of State and
Government.
o Its primary mandate is to strengthen public health institutions’ capacity to
prevent, detect, control, and respond effectively to disease threats.
o It oversees the implementation of the New Public Health Order, focusing
on strengthening institutions, workforce, local vaccine production,
domestic financing, and partnerships1.
Response to COVID-19:
o During the COVID-19 pandemic, Africa CDC played a vital role in
coordinating responses across African countries.
o It facilitated information sharing, resource allocation, and technical
assistance.
