Inclusive education has been widely adopted as a means to provide all students,
regardless of their differences, with the opportunity to learn and succeed. However,
despite the adoption of inclusive education, exclusion continues to persist in
education systems around the world. This raises the question: why does exclusion
persist despite the adoption of inclusive education?
My understanding of inclusive education has been shaped by my experiences of
power, equity, inclusion, and social difference. Growing up, I witnessed firsthand the
disparities in access to education based on social and economic factors. I saw how
power dynamics often marginalized certain groups of students, and how those with
, the most privilege were the ones who had the most opportunities. These experiences
have taught me that true inclusion requires actively dismantling the systems of power
and privilege that perpetuate exclusion.
Inclusive education is not just about physically integrating students with diverse
needs into the same classroom; it is about creating a culture of acceptance, respect,
and support for all students. This requires a deep understanding of social difference
and how it impacts learning. Teachers need to possess the relevant skills,
knowledge, and attitudes to implement inclusive education effectively. However, my
assessment is that many teachers may not possess these necessary attributes.
Teachers need to be equipped with the knowledge of how to support students with
diverse needs, including those with disabilities, language barriers, or learning
differences. They need to have the skills to create inclusive learning environments
that cater to the needs of all students. Furthermore, teachers must have the attitudes
of empathy, understanding, and commitment to diversity and inclusion. However,
many teachers may lack the training and support to develop these attributes.
In addition to the lack of skills, knowledge, and attitudes, the persistence of exclusion
in education can also be attributed to broader social and systemic factors. Inclusive
education requires a shift in the entire education system, including policies, funding,
and resources, to truly accommodate the needs of all students. This may require a
dismantling of existing power structures and a rethinking of traditional education
paradigms.
