children’s literature? Why?
The extract is written in simple language, the main characters are children (Peter,
Susan, Edmund, and Lucy) who will be interesting to child readers. The events that
are narrated in the story are related to their experiences, which is characteristic of
the type of literature aimed at children. The words chosen in the extract are quite
simple and easy to understand what is being said and therefore, children can be said
to be the target audience of the extract. It is simple text with short sentences and the
words used are easily understandable even by a lay reader. The use of descriptive
words used in the context simplifies the work so that young readers are easily able to
understand it without getting lost in the language used.

3. We could state that the author has developed one character more than
the others. Identify this character and explain why this statement is true.
(4 marks).
The author has developed the old Professor character more than the others. There is
clear physical description of the Professor who has “shaggy white hair, which grew
over most of his face as well as on his head.” The children’s reactions to him are
depicted when Lucy had a fright then Edmund consider him as funny, showing the
effect of this man’s appearance and demeanour on them. The text gives some
context about the Professor as a character, including the fact that he has no wife, but
instead has a housekeeper and three servants; that his house is located in a remote
area, being ten miles from the nearest railway station and two miles from the nearest
