Inclusive education can be conceptualised as the provision of quality education to all learners through access, participation and achievement. In other words, teachers are required to not only accommodate their learners’ diversity, but also understand their learners’ strengths, needs and interests to teach them effectively. This implies that teachers must develop the competencies to accommodate linguistic, cultural, socioeconomic, gender, and developmental diversity. Inclusive education is an evolving concept that aims to provide all students, regardless of their
backgrounds and abilities, with equal access to learning opportunities. My understanding of inclusive
education has been significantly shaped by personal experiences and observations related to power
dynamics, equity, inclusion, and social differences.

Power Dynamics:
Experiencing power imbalances in various educational settings has highlighted the importance of
equitable resource distribution and decision-making processes. In classrooms where certain groups
wield more power, marginalized students often face disadvantages. Witnessing these dynamics has
reinforced my belief in the need for inclusive policies that empower all students, particularly those
from underrepresented groups.

Equity:
Equity goes beyond mere equality by recognizing that different students have different needs.
Observing the disparities in educational outcomes among students from diverse socioeconomic
backgrounds has underscored the importance of providing tailored support. My understanding of
inclusive education emphasizes the need for differentiated instruction and resources to ensure that
every student can achieve their potential.

Inclusion:
Inclusive education is fundamentally about creating environments where all students feel valued and
included. My experiences in diverse educational settings have shown that inclusion is not just about
physical presence in the classroom but also about meaningful participation. This has informed my
belief that inclusive education requires a holistic approach that addresses social, emotional, and
academic needs.

Social Differences:
Understanding the various social differences, including race, gender, disability, and culture, has been
crucial in shaping my views on inclusive education. These differences can create barriers to learning
if not adequately addressed. My experiences have taught me that inclusive education must be
culturally responsive and sensitive to the unique challenges faced by different student groups.
