1. Entrepreneurship
Unemployment and economic inequality remain some of the biggest
challenges for South Africa which is similar to many other developing
countries. Thus, introducing entrepreneurship at the primary school level
gives children a positive attitude, critical thinking skills, and creativity in
observing opportunities and challenges that exist in their community and
coming up with solutions for the challenges. With an understanding of the
fundamental concepts related to business start-up and continuation, it is
possible to promote thinking in terms of creativity, persistence, and
initiative among students. Entrepreneurship education also promotes
creativity, self-employment, and entrepreneurship competence among the
students. It imparts skills like business planning, marketing, and financial
management apart from being able to make the youths exhibit
entrepreneurial characteristics.
2. Digital literacy
Given today’s technological environment, it virtually becomes mandatory
that students become relevant in technology and innovation skills to
succeed in future workplaces and economies. This subject would entail
areas such as information technology literacy, computer programming,
technology problem-solving, and recognizing new technologies. It will
enable students to acquire abilities that enable them to answer the call of
newer technologies and create and succeed in the digital age economy.
Acquiring technology and innovation skills and dispositions is beneficial for
the problem-solving, creativity, and flexibility of the students. It will equip
learners to harness technology for learning and work as well as job market
positioning to make unique and valuable economic contributions in South
Africa.
